Assignment English I - NOUN (meeting II)

What is a noun?
NOUN

1. Noun          : used for name, abstract idea, person, etc
2. Function     : Subject, Direct – Indirect object, adjective, adverb, subject – object complement, etc
3. Appositive  : noun yang menjelaskan noun di depannya 

Example: Amel is Carla’s Sister

4. Kinds:
a) Concrete Noun             : we can touch, taste, hearing, smell , sight, etc
b) Abstract Noun              : we can’t touch, taste, hearing, smell , sight, etc
c) Countable Noun            : Can count
    ex: book, pencil, computer, etc
    Singular            : not using ‘s’                                ex: i have a book
    Plural               : using ‘s/es’                                  ex: i have some books
d) Uncountable Noun                    : can’t count
    ex: freedom, maturity, intelligence

 Categories of uncountable nouns:
  • Abstract
  • Material (fluids, solids)
  • Non-Plurals but using ‘s/es’(photos)
  • Language
  • Field of study
  • Recreation
  • Whole groups made up of similar news
  • General activities
  • Natural phenomena (weather, dew, fog)

5. Possessive Noun:
      a) using ‘s : someone indicated have a thing 
ex: Mary's house is turn right from this road
      b) using  s’: someone have more than one things
 ex: Mary houses' are turn right from this road.

6. Capitalizing words: Reference
1. Proper/Spesific Nouns:
         v People name (John, Nathan, Renata)
         v Date and Month (September, April)
         v Special Day (Christmas-Day, Ied Mubarak)
         v Famous place (Royal Park, Jatim Park)
2. Common/General  Nouns: . A common noun names general items.
         v Thing (Book Pencil)
         v General Place (House, School,)

Example:
Although there are five other chairs in the living room, everyone in Jim's family fights to sit in the puffy new Roll-O-Rocker.
Chairs = common noun; Roll-O-Rocker = proper noun.

Reference: 

Modifiers can come before or after the noun. Ones that come before might include articles, possessive nouns, and possessive
Articles: a dog, the dog
Possessive nouns: Aunt Audrey's dog, the neighbor's dog, the police officer's dog
Possessive pronouns: Our dog, her dog, their dog
Adjectives: That dog, the big dog, the spotted dog
Participles: The drooling dog, the barking dog, the well trained dog
Prepositional phrases: A dog on the loose, the dog in the front seat, the dog behind the fence
Adjective clauses: The dog that chases cats, the dog that looks lost, the dog that won the championship
Participle phrases: The dog whining for a treat, the dog clipped at the grooming salon, the dog walked daily
Infinitives: The dog to catch, the dog to train, the dog to adopt
